IEC Workforce Preparation Continues Throughout the Summer

IEC Atlanta and Georgia chapters are always working on behalf of its members workforce.  July enrollment completed, October enrollment is opening August 26th and apprentices have started class this week.  Training and strengthening IEC member workforces! 

As the summer comes to an end, here’s a summary of some activities we have been busy working on, that helped us get to nearly 1,000 apprentices enrolled in IEC Atlanta and Georgia chapters!

IEC Atlanta Workforce Development Coordinator, Marcus Benson attended the GACTE annual conference.  This conference represented thousands of careers and technical education professionals working closely with students.  Marcus connected with educators who will help students find their paths to the start of their electrical career.

IEC took part in a GA Tech two-week camp where high school students learned about electrical theory, generation, distribution and installation.

Both Workforce Development Coordinators attended Skills USA June 23rd to the 27th.  

There were 2 Camp Trade and Industry (T&I) events that provided hands-on training.  This program was hosted by Construction Ready and the GADOE.  Camps took place in Brunswick and Calhoun, GA.  IEC Georgia Workforce Development Coordinator, Hance Joiner was onsite to help ignite future electrical workers.  High school construction instructors from across the state were trained in conduit bending, 3-way and 4-way switches, as well as basic electrical circuitry. These instructors will take these skills to use in their day-to-day instruction with their students, improving the quality of their education and the electrical skills of these graduates. A special thanks to Keith Haskell and Chris Sanning for leading this valuable training.

We have access to the future of the electrical industry at our finger tips.  Starting early, stirring interest will give us strong candidates to add to contractor workforces!  Let’s build our workforce!

Apprenticeship– Train your workers to be skilled top performers on your job site.

Workforce Services– We help you to recruit your workforce, train your workforce and retain your workforce.  IEC has 2 full-time recruiters with the main purpose of finding talent for IEC members.  Monthly hiring fairs, open houses and courses targeted at getting green workers ready to work, therefore growing your workforce.  Right now, there are 2 courses designed for applicants looking to join the electrical industry.

  1. Skilled Based Installer– This is a 4-week course designed to prepare an inexperienced worker to join your organization ready to hit your jobsite and be productive. They are OSHA 10 trained for a safe performance, they learn pipe bending, wiring and more.  This is one of IEC’s answers to the workforce shortage.  Let’s build your workforce.
  2. New Employability Workshop– New to the workforce, this course stresses applicant interview skills and professionalism. The soft skills that may prevent the ability to express the true potential of a candidate.  We are working to create the well-rounded new hire.

 

Skilled Electricians can be found on www.meetladder.com.  This membership is provided to you free of charge as an IEC member.  List your experienced positions and recruit on us! 

Loan/Borrow program.  Loan your workers or borrow workers from other IEC contractors.  Some changes happen quick, and IEC wants to help you make your business pivots smoothly!

Once you have your skilled, trained and professional workers, IEC wants to help you keep them.  How do you retain workers?  Make sure they have access to health insurance and retirement benefits.  Let them know you’ve got them covered!

Creating Workforce Loyalty and Longevity

In July of 2021 IEC Atlanta, Georgia chapters graduated 91 apprentices.  There are so many success stories for so many graduates.  What happens after an IEC apprentice graduates?  What can the investing contractor expect from their skilled trained apprentice?  IEC has one story here.

Alfred Wheeler is a 2021 IEC graduate and his training during the apprenticeship program has already manifested into a thriving and promising career with IEC Contractor Pat Murphy Electric.  Alfred is a perfect example of how a contractor investing in workers can pay off for both the contractor and worker. 

Just before Alfred graduated from the IEC apprenticeship program, Pat Murphy Electric promoted him to Assistant Project Manager!  So he graduates looking forward to a bright future and completely motivated to give all that Pat Murphy Electric has given him, back in his performance and potentially being a key factor to the continued growth of Pat Murphy Electric. 

A little over 4 years ago Alfred Wheeler applied for the IEC Apprenticeship program.  He received 3 contractor referrals from the IEC training department and within 3 to 4 weeks he was hired with an IEC contractor.  The contractors were very responsive and he began working really fast.  Operations Manager, Chelsea Roberts of PME shares why Alfred Wheeler was chosen to invest in.  “He was quick at catching on learning from senior members, exemplified leadership, teamwork, has a thirst for learning and dressed for the job he would like to have, “states Chelsea.

Today as Assistant Project Manager at Pat Murphy Electric, Alfred Wheeler describes his experience with Pat Murphy Electric as “the best time.”  He used phrases such as “Great Company,” “Like a Family,” “Pat Murphy is everything!”  The truly telling statement coming from Alfred is, “They saw the value in me, I plan to retire with PME someday.”

Pat Murphy Electric has a motivated and dedicated worker with the best intentions for PME, and PME has the best intentions for their employee which is exhibited by PME investing in Alfred Wheeler.   As Chelsea Roberts stated,” At Pat Murphy Electric, Inc. we really consider our team a family, and just as a family builds others up, we will continue to invest in our employee’s careers and lives. When we invest in them, they will in turn invest in us (and Alfred is a great example of that) and hopefully make their tenure with us longer. “   This is exactly why IEC apprenticeship and management classes are important as contractors build their businesses.  Here is where the foundation of loyalty and longevity can begin.  Thanks to Pat Murphy Electric and Alfred Wheeler for conveying how it’s done.
