We’ve made it through another week of probably many firsts for each of us! Some may be mundane, such as not going out to eat all week, while others may have learned a completely new skill, such as hosting a Zoom webinar, which I did this week.
The Zoom webinar that we provided on Thursday was on “Practical Industrial Hygiene in the Construction Environment Regarding COVID-19” and you can view it here. (there is a 45 second lag before the video begins). We also provided a Site-Specific Industrial Hygiene and Safety Procedures that is also on our website.
Next Wednesday, April 1st at Noon, IEC Atlanta/Georgia will provide a live webinar on “Construction Downturn Strategies” hosted by IEC Partner Member Adam Cooper from Ascent Consulting. Watch for the invitation to be sent out soon.
Because electrical work has been deemed an essential industry we have escaped the “state-at-home” notices. You can use theEssential Worker Template here to give to your workers if they are stopped by law enforcement for not obeying the notice. This is also available on our website with all of our COVID-19 resources at www.iecatlantaga.org/coronavirus IEC signed on to a letter with over 20 other construction related association that has been sent to Governor Kemp to emphasize and maintain construction as an essential service.
IEC National provided a fantastic podcast this week on “How Will COVID-19 Impact the Electrical Industry“ that I highly recommend you take the time to review. Economist Anirban Basu notes an unusual V-shaped market reaction and steep recovery due to a Supply Shock of the market, versus a Demand Shock, as in the Great Recession.
2020 Code Changes class is currently being developed online to assure that all of our members can receive their required CEUs by June and also get the required information for the new 2020 NEC. The 4-hour online CEU classes that are part of the Comprehensive Code Class will be available next week.
To help all citizens in need right now, IEC will be hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive at the IEC on Friday, April 10th from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. You may sign-up online here. Of course, proper safety protocols will be strictly followed.

During the pandemic I’ve talked with countless people about staying motivated and positive. Motivation is a powerful, yet tricky beast. Sometimes it is really easy to get motivated, and you find yourself wrapped up in a whirlwind of excitement. Other times, it is nearly impossible to figure out how to motivate yourself and you’re trapped in a death spiral of procrastination. Author, James Clear, provides some best ideas and useful research on how to get and stay motivated – Read more

During this unprecedented time, IEC Atlanta/Georgia is working overtime to quickly adjust to the COVID-19 pandemic, and I would like to provide you with some updates here. Additioanlly, I would like to thank our IEC staff that have quickly jumped into action for our members.
First, we have successfully moved all of our 715 apprentices in 45 classes to our online delivery system with little issues. We are working with instructors who are new to teaching online how to effectively teach in a virtual classroom. Online classes will occur through March 27th with the mid-term exams taking place online as scheduled the week of March 30th. The following week of April 6th will be spring break with no classes. During that week the Board of Directors and staff will assess whether classes will continue online or return to onsite classes, and we will keep both our members and apprentices apprised of the decision.
Next, we are implementing online CEU classes the week of March 23rd. These code classes will be in four-50 minute sessions, just as the norm for onsite classes. These can be purchased and viewed at any time from your office or home and are good for your required CEU state license renewal. These will feature our code instructor Terry Rogers.
We will also be implementing live webinars that will be on pertinent topics to help you through these challenging times. The first webinar will cover proper safety hygiene on the obsite and conducted by our OSHA Certified Safety Instructor, Darryl Fitch. Additional topics in the pipeline are: Supply Chain Disruption, Preparing for a Possible Recession and Are You Prepared for a Union Visit? These will also be recorded and available on our website to be viewed at your convenience. These webinars will be in lieu of our monthly luncheon meetings until we can once again network together.
We are seeing a few lay-offs and loaning of workers, therefore it is extremely important that you keep us informed of your loaning, borrow, layoff and hiring needs so that we may assist you with your employment needs. Please send your needs directly to Julie Gunter at julie.gunter@iecatlantaga.org
Sometimes we are forced into uncomfortable situations that we must adapt, and that certainly has been the case with CV19! When faced with these situations, we always have two choices – to adapt or to stay firmly entrenched. In our present situation, we’ve had little choice but to adapt. And sometimes when we adapt, we realize that the new situation is not all that bad, and in fact, it may be preferred. During this time, we’ve all had some time to reflect upon the choices we have made, and what choices we’ll make in the future based upon what we know now. For me, I’m glad that I’ve made the choices to travel to different countries and parts of the US when I did. I also know, that when I have the opportunity to travel again, I’ll take it.
STATE OF THE INDUSTRY In speaking both with local and national IEC contractors, work levels still continue to hold up. There have been minor job closures, but members continue to remain on job sites. The hardest hit have been residential service contractors, and yet other contractors have seen an increase in work such as schools, health care facilities and those supporting essential services such as grocery stores and chemical plants. The biggest theme we have heard center around postponement of jobs that have been awarded, but not yet started. Please keep us informed as you run into issues – niel.dawson@iecatlantaga.org

Virtual labs are being rolled out every week for our instructors to use in the online apprenticeship classes – check out one of these labs now. Fall Atlanta 1st year class application deadline is June 12th. Your apprentices should be applying online now Fall Georgia 1st year class application deadline is July 10th. STIMULUS STANDOFF ON CAPITAL HILL Uncertainty hangs over the next coronavirus relief package, as Democrats and Republicans remain far apart on a number of issues, including the enhanced unemployment benefit.
Both sides agree on sending out a second round of $1,200 checks to Americans. However, on several major items, closed-door talks between top White House officials and congressional Democratic leaders yielded little progress this week. Read more

Democrats Resigned that Amy Coney Barrett Confirmation is Inevitable: ‘We Can’t Stop the Outcome’ As much as Democrats detest the confirmation process of Judge Amy Coney Barrett — panning the election year effort as illegitimate, dangerous and rife with hypocrisy— they’ve acknowledged there’s little they can do to stop her lifelong ascension to the Supreme Court.
With Republicans holding the Senate majority and seemingly having the votes to confirm Barrett, Democrats say they don’t have a silver bullet to stop the fast-tracked confirmation schedule that will kick off Monday. More Info

BEYOND PPP: FEDERAL LOANS, TAX CREDITS FOR CONTRACTORS
Other Federal Loans
The Main Street Lending Program was established by the Federal Reserve in response to the COVID-19 outbreak and makes loans to small- and medium-sized businesses — through authorized lenders — that were in “sound financial condition” before the pandemic.
Main Street New Loan Facility (MSNLF) — these loans are available to companies with 15,000 or fewer employees and $5 billion or less in revenue. The company must pay the loan, generally capped at the lesser of $35 million or four times the borrower’s adjusted 2019 EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) within five years. The minimum loan size is $250,000.
Main Street Priority Loan Facility (MSPLF) — these loans have similar requirements as the MSNLF except the maximum loan is limited to the lesser of $50 million or six times the borrower’s EBITDA. The minimum loan size is $250,000.
Main Street Expanded Loan Facility (MSELF) — these loans have many of the same requirements as the other two facilities, but the loan size is limited to the lesser of $300 million or six times the borrower’s EBITDA. The minimum loan size is $10 million.
Debt Relief – For those construction firms that already have certain loans backed by the SBA — 7(a) general lending program, 504 loans for major fixed assets and microloans — the administration has decided to pay six months of all borrowers’ payments. This includes principal, interest and other loan-related fees.

Jobsite Safety and Technology During the Coronavirus Pandemic – What You Need to Know
Coronavirus has given jobsite safety a new meaning — and new ways to use technology data to maintain safety. Amid the pandemic, the best systems create transparency allowing executives, contractors and subs to work together to create safer workplaces. Read More.
One of my favorite authors, James Clear recently posted, “The more control you have over your attention, the more control you have over your future.” This is now more true than ever, with all the attention, fear-based news that is constantly served up to us. And Albert Gray, a life insurance executive, goes on to say that “Every single qualification for success is acquired through habit. People form habits and habits form futures. If you do not deliberately form good habits, then unconsciously you will form bad ones. You are the kind of person you are because you have formed the habit of being that kind of person, and the only way you can change is through habit.” So if we are constantly focusing our attention on fear-based news, that habit will form into more fear, instead of looking for solutions. Let’s focus our attention on solutions so that our future will be filed with results that benefit not only ourselves, but the people we come in contact with both personally and professionally. Tell us how we can help you with solutions to your business issues – we’re here to help!
