1st Annual Columbus Golf Tournament Starts on a Big Note!
On Friday, September 24th IEC Georgia chapter hosted its 1st annual Columbus golf tournament at Maple Ridge Golf Club in Columbus, Georgia.
15 teams consisting of IEC members, partners and guests came out to compete and raise funds for IEC’s GIFT program that helps to fund apprentices enrolled in IEC’s apprenticeship program. Teams enjoyed a continental breakfast and tee off time was 9:00am.
IEC congratulates the following winners;
1st Place- Interstate Electrical Supply, team members Josiah Goodman, Brent Jones, Ryan Pickrell and Hunter Watson finishing with a score of 57.
2nd Place- Fuller Fire & Safety Equipment, team members Phllip Psalmond, Andrew Wilson, Matt Davis and Phillip Psalmond, Sr. scoring a 59.
3rd Place- Ritch Electric, team members John Pound, Dusty Worsley, Rick Garcia and Sam Bassett with a score of 61.
4th Place- Milwaukee Tool, team members Brent Alfonso, Landon Simcoe, Luke Bright and Tom Nutshell also scoring a 61.
Closest to the Pin is Steve Dashiell and Longest Drive goes to John Pound of Ritch Electric.

Open Enrollment For Apprenticeship Ends Tomorrow, September 2nd! You have until TOMORROW, September 2nd to register your workers.
– Atlanta In-Person 1st Year September: Students will attend class 2 nights per week on Mondays & Wednesdays for most of 1st Semester. After Thanksgiving Break, students will attend class 1 night per week on Wednesdays from 5:00pm – 9:00pm.
Sept. 13th- 1st Year Online September: Students will attend class on Monday nights from 7:00pm – 9:30pm.
Sept. 27th- 1st Year Columbus: Students will attend class on Monday nights from 5:00pm – 9:00pm.
Sept 28th- 3rd Year Savannah: Students will attend class on Tuesday nights from 5:00pm – 9:00pm.

The August Open House was a great time of connecting with a group of 14 candidates to introduce them to careers an electrician and getting trained in the IEC Apprenticeship program. We toured the facility as well as shared the career path for an electrician. We included a short video on a “day in the life of an electrician” to help the candidates understand that to have this great career it requires hard work and sometimes less than ideal weather conditions. IEC Atlanta and Georgia chapters welcome new members! This summer we have had a consistent flow of new members joining our association for the networking, industry knowledge and training that IEC offers. Many of our members have joined for the apprenticeship and management training in order to develop a strong workforce during a time when there is a shortage of good workers. Our members understand the importance of building their skilled worker and investing in them and the future of the company.

IEC Atlanta Celebrates Its Largest Graduating Class In 2021
On July 8th at the Evergreen Marriott in Stone Mountain, IEC Atlanta/GA Chapters hosted over 200 guests in its celebration of 91 graduating apprentices. In attendance were family, friends, contractors and IEC staff to dining and displaying how so very proud of them we are!
This is IEC’s 51st annual graduation and its largest graduating class yet. Despite any challenges, electrical journey persons were made and IEC had a huge hand in it!
The event smoothly transitioned from the welcome of the IEC Atlanta Board of Directors President, Steve Askea, President of ASK-Kay Electrical Contractors, the Master of Ceremony delivery of Executive Director Niel Dawson and Associate Executive Director of Workforce, Todd Hawkins, to inspiring guest speaker Janet Martin, President of IEC National; award presenters, sponsors and graduates entering in their caps and gowns to make their momentous tassel turn. The music performed by Gwen Hughes set a winning atmosphere. As always it was a spectacular event! See pictures from this event below.

Congratulation to Timothy Jon Martin of Unger Electric, LLC; the 2021 IEC Atlanta Chapters Apprentice of the Year!
Timothy competed with 4th year apprentices for the opportunity to be awarded at the local level. The competition consists of two events: The wire-off and a written exam which covers material from all four years of study. Timothy has the highest number of total points and is awarded the highly coveted “Apprentice of the Year” award for the Atlanta Chapter IEC. As the winner of the Apprentice of the Year competition he wins a trip for 2 and $500 spending money for the IEC National Convention in New Orleans. LA, October 28-30, where he will represent the Atlanta Chapter and compete in the National Apprentice of the Year competition.
Andrew Howard of Excel Electrical Technologies, Inc. came in second place and will fulfill the duties should Timothy be unable to do so. Both Timothy and Andrew have earned their CPE credentials, a nationally recognized credential where individuals have demonstrated skills, proficiency and knowledge regarding the electrical field.

In July of 2021 IEC Atlanta, Georgia chapters graduated 91 apprentices. There are so many success stories for so many graduates. What happens after an IEC apprentice graduates? What can the investing contractor expect from their skilled trained apprentice? IEC has one story here.
Alfred Wheeler is a 2021 IEC graduate and his training during the apprenticeship program has already manifested into a thriving and promising career with IEC Contractor Pat Murphy Electric. Alfred is a perfect example of how a contractor investing in workers can pay off for both the contractor and worker.
Just before Alfred graduated from the IEC apprenticeship program, Pat Murphy Electric promoted him to Assistant Project Manager! So he graduates looking forward to a bright future and completely motivated to give all that Pat Murphy Electric has given him, back in his performance and potentially being a key factor to the continued growth of Pat Murphy Electric.
A little over 4 years ago Alfred Wheeler applied for the IEC Apprenticeship program. He received 3 contractor referrals from the IEC training department and within 3 to 4 weeks he was hired with an IEC contractor. The contractors were very responsive and he began working really fast. Operations Manager, Chelsea Roberts of PME shares why Alfred Wheeler was chosen to invest in. “He was quick at catching on learning from senior members, exemplified leadership, teamwork, has a thirst for learning and dressed for the job he would like to have, “states Chelsea.
Today as Assistant Project Manager at Pat Murphy Electric, Alfred Wheeler describes his experience with Pat Murphy Electric as “the best time.” He used phrases such as “Great Company,” “Like a Family,” “Pat Murphy is everything!” The truly telling statement coming from Alfred is, “They saw the value in me, I plan to retire with PME someday.”
Pat Murphy Electric has a motivated and dedicated worker with the best intentions for PME, and PME has the best intentions for their employee which is exhibited by PME investing in Alfred Wheeler. IEC Atlanta/GA New Training Manager
Introducing IEC Atlanta/GA Training Manager Dee Waltower! She is no stranger to IEC or the apprenticeship program. Her career with IEC began in 2010 helping with graduation. In 2013 she worked with a previous Training Manager, Lana Frye, filing and entering data after school. By 2014 she officially became a part-time office assistant. Dee left her position, attended college and then returned in March of 2019 as Apprenticeship and Training Assistant. There was no stopping her after that. April of 2021 she was promoted to Apprenticeship and Training Coordinator and now she is the Training Manager.
Dee replaces former Training Manager, Julie Gunter who has moved to the newly created Records/Administrator position. Make note of new contact information; email dee.waltower@iecatlantaga.org.
Dee is excited to serve in this new position and she is sure to serve the apprenticeship program well!

GA Chapter Savannah Golf Tournament Put Fun In Fundraising

IEC’s Georgia Chapter hosted another fabulous event! Contractors, Partner members and guests enjoyed the 5th Annual IEC Georgia Chapter Golf Tournament. On Thursday, May 13th 7:30AM at The Club at Savannah Harbor, 20 teams teed off for some competitive fun and networking. As we adjust into the new normal, it is just as important to take time to connect with those in the electrical industry.
This golf tournament did more than just provide a networking opportunity; it proves to be a successful fundraiser as well. Funds were raised to go towards IEC GIFT, Georgia Industry Foundation for Training. Golfers purchased $1300 in mulligans and participated in a vacation raffle earning $2,170 in proceeds, which calculates a total of $3,470 donated to GIFT! Donations are used to provide scholarships to those students needing financial assistance to pursue their goal to be an electrician!
Congratulations to IEC apprentice Corey Neal of Glawson Electric for winning the Vacation Raffle. Cory is a member of the National Guard and is currently deployed, so he is attending classes online. When he returns he will be able to have a great vacation in Orlando, Florida staying at the Hard Rock Café along with 2 days at 3 theme parks!
At every IEC event there are the winners! We had a close game with a tie breaker needed between 3 of the teams. Let’s congratulate these skilled golfers;

IEC Georgia Contractor, Robbie Jones of Coastal Electric matches $4,000 GIFT Donation
IEC Atlanta/ GA chapters is elated that Georgia contractor member, Robbie Jones of Coastal Electric of Georgia has matched donations for IEC’s Installer Program in the amount of $4,000. This extremely generous donation is directed towards “Special Needs Programs” that cater to at risk youth. Youth that are vulnerable to dropping out and finding a less appealing path.
